Debt Relief Solutions for Medical Debt- Part One

The rising costs of healthcare and the increasing number of people without medical insurance are contributing to a rise in medical debt and consumers who are seeking medical debt relief. There are studies that have shown that more than four of five medical bills have errors or overcharges, but most consumers aren't able to identify them or fight them because they don't know what they are looking for. In order to find the faults, consumers must be able to get itemized bills and medical history records.

Here is a list of some common errors in medical billing:

1. Charges for services that weren't performed. This is where consumers can compare their bills to their medical records to see that there are differences in what was done versus what they were charged for. In this situation, either there was a mix up with another patient or an outright error in billing by whoever translated the record into a bill.
2. Duplicate bills are very common, as well. Getting billed twice for the same medical treatment is not uncommon but many people don't realize it happens. Make sure that you read all bills to avoid this.
3. Failed treatments or services. Sometimes, when a procedure doesn't go as planned, a second is needed for conclusive results. In this situation, the hospital or doctor has no grounds to charge for the extra tests because it was their fault.
4. Phantom or assumed charges are another common billing error. If you were treated for a specific ailment, it might be presumed that you received certain treatment, even if you didn't. Make sure that you are not charged for treatment that you did not receive, or that you aren't charged for more time than you spent in the office or hospital.
5. Human error or computer error is one of the most common billing errors. Make sure that you aren't being charged too much due to a typo or botched bill preparation. For example, if your pain relief medication is charged at $60 when it was simply OTC (over the counter) medications, you might want to speak up because this is not right.
